Sea to Sand
- By Robin L. Graham
Where do you have contrast in your life, and what can it mean for you?
I recently experienced an incredible trip to Egypt, which provided the idea of contrast.
I flew to Cairo and spent 4 hours at the amazing Egyptian museum (the original), gawking in amazement at the history and artistry created 1000’s of years ago.
Then, we spent a week on a boat anchored in the Red Sea swimming with dolphins. Gentle, joyful beings who could swim where ever they wanted yet chose to swim under, around, and with the humans who were making noise and movements on the surface.
Then, we went on a 4-day guided tour of temples, tombs, and pyramids. Wow! Again, amazement at the abilities to create the artistry and buildings 1000’s of years ago.
It was other worldly to have seen pictures of the great pyramids and realize that I was standing there, walking around and touching these ancient sites.
While many experiences impacted me, what I invite here is the exploration of the contrast represented between the ocean and the land, between the current Cairo and the ancient pyramids, and so much more.
What is in contrast for you?
We all experience contrast, such as day and night, happy and sad, spring and fall… yet how often do we experience one and wish for the other? Not being fully present for either?
I found that while in the depth of a tomb with heat and crowds, I was wishing I could jump in the Red Sea with the dolphins again.
I then quickly realized that it was best for me to fully observe, experience and remember where I was at that moment rather than be pulled into my internal thoughts. Being fully present locked into my memory the vast and unique sites.
Contrast is beneficial when we appreciate the uniqueness and stay present to each experience.
The invitation is to become more aware of contrast and see the benefit in each experience—even those you prefer not to be having. When we stay curious and open to what is unique about an experience, you grow in awareness and often compassion for others.
When we only want to experience what we want, we are missing out on expanding our perspectives and understanding of how differences can be impactful.
What differences or contrasts can you choose to accept?
