Space: Active or Quiet?

Space… What image, concept, and meaning does that word elicit?

The picture of the lily and lily pads stands out due to the variations of shapes and the space they use as well as the sunlight and shadows created by the position in space in that moment of the sun.

While observing a reflection in a window of movement on a ski slope, I was struck by the timing of the constant movement, and yet there were moments where nothing was moving in the reflection… only quiet space.

I became mesmerized with the reflection of space, the use of space and the importance of space.

There are a vast quantity of applications of the word space:
  • Outer space
  • Parking space
  • Quiet space
  • Space between breaths
  • Space between heartbeats
  • Space between thoughts
  • Space between cars or people
  • Space with musical notes
  • Spacebetweenletterstoreadasentence
  • Giving someone space
  • Liminal space

Without space, reading is challenging, life is overwhelming, and I suspect chaos would be prevalent.

Where in your life have you filled it so full there does not seem to be any quiet space?

Where in your life can you choose to create an increase in space?

I used to think that quiet space was wasting time… however, it is critical for our personal life and relationships.

Impact of space:

Decisions: Space creates clarity instead of reaction

Behaviors: Space interrupts unconscious patterns

Relationships: Space allows others to exist as they are

Emotional regulation: Space softens intensity

Identity and growth: Space is where transformation happens

Even small moments of space matter:

  • Before responding: take one breath
  • Before deciding, ask, “What’s driving this?” or “What actually matters?”
  • In conflict: pause 3 seconds longer than feels comfortable

Space is an extremely valuable asset that we consistently have…

How can you use it better today?
