Bumpy and Smooth
- By Robin L. Graham
Where are you experiencing life being bumpy or smooth?
On a recent flight, during takeoff and ascending, it was very bumpy and rough due to storms in the area. Yet, once we got above the clouds, it was beautiful and smooth the rest of the way.
What a wonderful metaphor for life experiences!
All of us have experienced bumpy, rough times (you may be in one now).
And we have also experienced when life is smooth. When you are in the bumpy section, rather than asking ‘Why is this happening to me?’ types of questions, what if you shift it to “Why is this happening FOR me?”
The change of the word ‘to’ into ‘FOR’ can make all the difference in transitioning from being frustrated with an experience into being curious about it.
Perhaps it is an experience to help learn compassion for yourself or someone else…
Perhaps it could be here to help you understand that you had an inkling or intuition of a different action, and you are being validated that your intuition was correct.
The key is to redirect your thinking, to be curious and open for new options.
Additionally, when you are in the smooth life, what insights can you gain from that experience?
- Could you stop and realize how grateful you are?
- Could you reach out and appreciate someone in your life?
- How can you use the smooth experiences to inform you when you are in a rough and bumpy experience?
If you look back at your life, there are probably several occasions when you wondered if you were going to get out of the bumpy and rough times. Yet you did.
While there is a preference for the smooth experience, what if the bumpy ones are there for your learning and growth?
You can learn in the smooth ones too. Yet, my experience is that the bumpy and rough creates personal expansion, though insights are not found when it is smooth.
My other thought about this is we need both—we would not appreciate the smooth if we didn’t have the contrast of the bumpy. And visa versa.
What can you create to remind yourself to remember that when life is bumpy and rough, there is a smooth experience available to you?
