Recently while staying at an AirBnB on a lake, I decided to see the lake by kayaking around it. I had only been in a kayak once many years ago during an Alaska cruise.
My recall was that it was easy to do so off I went for my lake tour.
What I quickly realized is the Alaska kayak had a seat designed to keep the water out… not so with this one. Got soaked by the water dripping off the paddle each time I lifted it to paddle on the other side.
Then, I learned that a deep paddle pull on one side requires a matching deep pull on the other OR you end up moving in a direction different than straight ahead.
Sometimes even though I did a deep pull, the kayak did not respond and would require several but then it zipped around to the opposite side faster than I could counter paddle… geez!
And discovered that if I was going too much in one direction to just let it go and the kayak would continue until it stopped, then I could begin again. That seemed easier sometimes.
Ah, a soft gentle paddle on each side resulted in a fairly straight path.
Oh, now there is a breeze that is pushing me to one side – counter paddle… counter paddle.
Then I realized that getting out of the kayak at the dock was not something I planned for and I would be doing it with no one else around… and was wondering how I would retrieve it if it floated away before I could secure it.
I did make it back onto the dock successfully and was able to secure the kayak on the dock!
During our daily life, lessons from my kayak experience can relate to how we approach projects, people, and life.
- Are you pulling too hard?
- Are you only pulling in one direction and not creating balance?
- What is creating any frustrating drips on you?
- Where can you let go to see where the situation ends up?
- What path corrections can you make?
- How can you discover a gentler way to reach your goal?
- What impact does an external ‘breeze’ have on you?
- How can you glide with the impact?
- What preparation do you need to have once you reach your destination?
- Where are you missing an alternative view because you are only focused on one direction?
Consider these ideas as you move through your day with a project or with people.

To get something different, you have to shift from the inside out.
